"In all beginnings dwells a magic that protects us and helps us to live." (Hermann Hesse)
Dear parents and friends,
How are the new volunteers in their countries of operation?
The theory can be read here, the practice continues below.
Surprised, we note: It is consistent! :-)
true both us confident that we have begun a good vintage of the task in and will grow.
According to theory, we find ourselves in the so-called "honeymoon" before brings the harsh reality of confrontation with poverty, suffering and injustice of our young people in the next few weeks on the floor of the (social) reality and challenges to action. It will be crucial if we are jointly able to survive the next 3 months good. Therefore, we are always talking about "100 days of effort! Then we are out of the woods ...
know, we are moving on a U-curve with the partial phases Honeymoon, sour-cucumber-time low point with homesickness, turning point (which has the FW gathered in his new environment and peace with the circumstances) and benefit from phase with Sinnerfuellung.
The present, first time is always seen as very intense and will soon bring the young people to the limits of manageable (we call this "crisis zone"): full of new experiences, it goes out from the familiar ("comfort zone"), purely in a previously unknown culture, language and reality. Raises questions, thoughts (whether you will pack the year) made.
We all try for the best balance between challenge and support. A tick "targeted excessive demands" is helpful because they will grow straight thereto. But a massive over-exposure is counterproductive, especially when there are no attacks Bewaeltigungsmechanismus and would be no reference person. That is why it is so incredibly important that we all share in our young people.
We are often asked why we work so much with humor and joy - would be deadly serious, inefficient?
humor is on us not an end. 1) It is an important protective factor is: He who laughs experience can handle better. (Laugh at themselves).
2) laughter is "music of the soul" and music for the soul. 3) It opens doors to our volunteers, which remain closed, perhaps (especially in a foreign culture). 4) It is simply a pleasant deal for us all. We treat ourselves!

The situation after the shock (because of the attack on Alt FW Leon) has calmed down.
course we think about different options to, for example, to move into a "Coto", a guard-gated residential community.
was, however, and it is our stated goal with the people at the base to live and work and not being separated from their everyday lives. In
careless behavior (solo walks after midnight) and there would indeed be no protection. Tuesday was
again the weekly rent meeting where questions were raised. FW is on its way back into the green zone.

Germany:
Cordula is also in the taz and quoted in the Mirror: http://www.spiegel.de/schulspiegel/ausland/0, 1518,503810,00 html
Cordula and Pablo are following the press conference the night. from Berlin to Bonn moved through to take part in the symposium of the developmental FW-makers. To save money, we would not be unlike most of the participants in the conference hotel, but nothing in the theater "The Raven" (Thanks Simon RP).
Whether the new State funding program for 2008 (Weltwaerts) is really a blessing turns out to be questioned more and more.
It certainly is a realistic scenario that the Ministry so that only a strategic realignment of the German Development Service (DED), operates the medium term would then take over many of the projects. The real scandal is that the DED same control instance and even its constituents. How many young people who volunteer all year round, DED, now that there are no developmental promotion? Answer: zero.
How he plans as soon as money comes from the state: 300 in 2008 and 1000 from 2010 onward. Overall, the number of German volunteers in developing countries should increase by a factor of 4 to be 10 000 FW per year. Due to this difficult
massiveness is feared that in 3 years, many small vehicles (like us) will stop developing.
Another issue that is discussed at the edge of these conferences over and over: safety.
think talking to other carriers I again and again: "Oh, we are fine!" We did not rape, kidnapping or other momentous acts of violence. Traeger A friend reports: In Burkina Faso was one of their FW at a stoplight by a madman with a knife attacked and seriously injured (fortunately, now out of danger).
course, we are lucky, but there are other reasons why our "damage assessment" is so low:
a good) selection of the FW (possible only responsible teenagers)
b) Good preparation and OATs with safety tips
c) Our FW enjoy most widely accepted in the local population , in the project and in their neighborhood => this is the best protection

Dominican Republic:
countries spokesman Manu Becker announces green (06.09.2007):
"We are everything goes brilliantly in everything. (...) The OAT is generally well thought out and we are all quite unbelievable "in" in the Dominican Republic. We were on our first "Fiesta" was beautiful. Tomorrow we go to the Batey (the poverty here is truly frightening, I have already considered a picture book for my dear friend create that congratulated me on the run-up to "my holiday" have). Laura and I have now seen from a bus out of the first outbreak of violence (in the presence of police). Ne is already incredibly busy time here. We all think we are mad to take a lot of "

Guatemala:
from countries spokesman Florian am 06.09:.
"Hello my friends!
Jonni and Kathy arrived safely yesterday.
Here is all great!
We have settled a bit in Coban. Today we were in language school and afternoon visits to projects. Coban is a beautiful city, the people are really nice and almost infinite patience as we try to express complex relationships in English.
The school also runs well at all, we learn a lot, we talk a lot, the only thing still remaining problems is preparing the complex bus system. Our predecessors show us day after day new routes and stops, and slowly a plan is in the head.
So as I said, everything runs in coban Guat!

arrival report by FW Green Marie Dahl
"Molweni dear friends, since Monday
I am now with the other Suedafrikafreiwilligen in Durban and so far everything is going well.
The flight went well, in Cape Town we have during our stay with Suzanne (my former exchange student) and made us ever gives a first impression of the South African coast. Great! :)
But during the trip we were able to see the townships and informal settlements along the highway. The poverty of large segments of the population here is incredible.
Here in Durban, we were happy, cheerful Receptions of two and four former volunteers who have been a few days in their projects. On Saturday we will travel by bus to our different projects. On Matze, Till and me wait almost 20 hours of driving.
The days here in Durban, we use to give us a little acculturate (Linksverkehr!) to practice Minibus Taxi (very funny :-)) and just us for a bit with Alex and Hendrik, the alumni, exchange, clarify issues, etc.
Yes, much, to be honest most of it is completely new. We have here the beginning of spring and nice weather as in German summer days. The people are very different, the food ..
I will report back soon when I arrived in Kwanokuthula likely.
Many, many greetings and you / Thank you for any kind of support.
Marie "
